Spelling Training

Image
The website Spelling training ( https://www.spellingtraining.com/ ) is another great resource to practice spelling at home. There are so many great ways to practice spelling on this website. To start you can enter your own spelling list or choose from one of their pre-made ones. The ones that they offer are sorted by grade level and broken down into different spelling rules. There are hundreds of pre-made lists on the site but if you do not find one that you like, you can always make your own list. Here is what the drop-down menu looks like and all you have to do is click on whatever sleeping rule you would like to practice and it will make the list for you. Once a spelling list is set up there are a wide variety of activities to do with the words. When you scroll down the page you see this menu of activity options: Here is a quick rundown of the different activities offered on this website: Online Spelling Test: you hear the words in a rand...

Sight Word Games

The next resource that I have is a website with sight word games. Dolch words are the sight words that we use in our school so this website is a great extension of learning from what your child is learning about at school. Dolch Word ( http://www.dolchword.net/ ) is a website with sight word games as well as printables if you do not always have access to a computer. You can both play games sorted into categories by grade level and you can all view and print out Dolch word lists. Here is the sidebar with the list of the different parts of the site that you can explore: This is a great website for those spellers that need some more practice with their basic sight words. Enjoy exploring!

The website Education.com ( https://www.education.com/games/spelling/ ) offers a lot of great resources and games for all subjects. Since this is a spelling blog I will highlight the different spelling games that they have to offer. When you press the link about you will see the page with all of the spelling games that looks like this: This page has all of the spelling games that they have to offer. You can either look through those games or sort the games using the menu on the left side. You can sort the games by grade level, spelling strategies (which includes sight words) and spelling patterns (there are so many!!). Here is one of my favorite games for sight words ( https://www.education.com/game/irregular-sight-words/ ). This game is great for students who have mastered regular sight word spelling but are still having some trouble with those irregular words: A lot of these games use both visuals and well as sounds which appeals to a wide variety of learners....

Videos Galore!

The YouTube channel Nessy ( https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCywhh5mhHMqsf5deT1nJ1uA ) has a wide variety of different strategies for spelling. They have a whole playlist with short videos about spelling techniques. Some of my favorite videos are: Chunking:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_W88ypviLSo Using pictures:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mGkEgdGYE84 Words within Words:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m8rQ6FLDWxo Another great video is:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NQflIjT3pjo  which has a variety of spelling strategies in one video. For example, making flashcards, writing spelling words in sentences, identifying word patterns and many more! Have fun exploring the videos! If you find any other videos please post them in the comments so that other parents can watch them too.

Welcome!

Welcome to my spelling blog! Here you will find a variety of resources to help your child with their spelling at home. You will be able to find everything from videos to games to other online resources here. Although we use some of these resources in our classroom there are many more here to provide different practice at home. Spelling is an important foundational skill for your child's writing. Although there are a lot of good resources on this blog, reading with your child every day will help improve their vocabulary and spelling by exposing them to lots of words. Here is a great article that helps to explain why spelling is important and how it helps to support reading:  http://www.readingrockets.org/article/how-spelling-supports-reading . If you have any questions do not hesitate to post in the comments and I will respond. I also want to encourage you to interact in the comment section with myself and other parents.
